His special areas of interest include sports and spinal rehabilitation, and he is part of the Advance Healthcare Pain Management Team. He has completed post-graduate studies in Sports Physiotherapy at La Trobe University in 2006 and has worked as team physiotherapist for the Pirates Rugby Union Club in New Zealand and has spent time based at Crystal Palace Sports Injury Centre; the headquarters of London athletics. He has also been a guest writer for 'The Ski Mag', an Australian Ski Magazine, providing performance exercise programs.

Shay has kept busy through his involvement in clinical research. He has been a treating therapist as part of a very successful series of La Trobe University studies on the treatment of low back pain, and is now a treating therapist in a Melbourne University trial on hip pain.

Outside of work Shay still finds time for his family and participating in his own sport. He enjoys the challenge of endurance sport, previously racing the Multisport World Championships across the southern alps of New Zealand and was recently rapt to break the 10 hour mark in Ironman Melbourne.
